I graduated from law school
in May 1994. In December 1994, after I had received favorable
bar results in November, I was hired to run the Learning Resource
Center of a prominent southern California law school. My sole
mission was to indoctrinate first-year students to the law
school process and help upper-division students get off Academic
Probation.
During my two years at this law school,
I listened to students complain about the extra-curricular
seminars and commercial materials. Most students felt such
services and products did not effectively teach, did not effectively
"turn on the light bulb," so to speak. I informally
polled students and bar candidates on their complaints regarding
these services and products. The common refrain was, "These
materials leave me even more confused, but when I listen to
you, Steve, you clear things up instantly!"
(Incidentally, I helped nearly
85% of all students I worked with get off Academic Probation.
One student went from Academic Probation to the Honor Roll
in one semester! In fact, I was so successful that the law
school's Dean called me in to her office to ask what I was
doing in my sessions. When I explained my methodologies, which
help students think and, most importantly, write analytically,
the Dean said, "Stop. We want the students to struggle
with the process.")
Needless to say, I left that law school. Immediately thereafter,
I served as Faculty Tutor at Chapman Law School, where the
common refrain among students I worked with was exactly the
same one I had heard at the previous school: "These materials
leave me even more confused, but when I listen to you, Steve,
you clear things up instantly!"
While working with these law students,
I founded Legal Education Consultants, which is now BARPERFECT,
in September of 1994. Focusing mainly on candidates that had
already failed the California bar exam, I encountered the
same refrain, though with a notable addition: "Steve,
you clear things up instantly. I wish I would have gone to
you before investing so much money with _______."
I'm passionate about teaching, and I feel helping people unlock
the mystery of law school and the bar exam is one of my life's
callings. BARPERFECT products and programs will be a welcome
change to law students and bar candidates, and a change both
deserve. BARPERFECT materials actually teach, sufficiently
explain, do not bog the reader down in useless minutiae, and
are written in "plain English." (Gee, what a concept.)
The same can be said about our one-on-one tutorial programs,
which, incidentally, are equally effective via distance learning,
if you can't make it to our office, located in Fullerton,
California.
Sincerely,
Steve Liosi,
Esq.
